- Lincoln's proposals for emancipation threatened their ability to own slaves
- Lincoln was also unclear about how he would approach emancipation, whether it would be sudden or over time
- The in-clarity made the South nervous
- Secessionists wanted to secede
- 7 states attempted secession
- Sent Major Robert Anderson to Washington D.C. for provisions

- Was a strong believer in the Constitution and wanted to maintain it's integrity
- Sent troops to the South to stop the rebellion

- On April 12, 1861, secessionists fired against American troops at Fort Sumter, beginning the Civil War.
