- Lincoln never stayed consistent with his politics and intentions, which made people, southern states especially, nervous about him becoming president.

- Four Candidates: John Bell, John C. Breckenridge, Stephen Douglas, and Abraham Lincoln
- No one candidate had a majority of the country
- Lincoln had the majority of the popular vote, 40%, which was not even half of the country
- Lincoln won 180 out of 300 electoral votes (60%)
- Because there was not everyone favored Lincoln, many people were angered by his election and felt secession would be necessary
- High tension between secessionists and anti- slavery activists
